Tax
UiO employees going abroad on a research sabbatical will most likely remain liable to pay tax in Norway on their salary and scholarship. Important exceptions apply to those going to the US or those going back to their country of citizenship. Furthermore, it is very important to be aware of the tax implications for spouses joining on sabbatical planning to work from home office abroad.
Immigration
Generally, it is not permitted to work in a country without a valid permit to work. Even if your work abroad is temporary, you may need to apply for a work permit in order to be able to work abroad. Several countries have exemptions for researchers and lecturers performing work in their country for a shorter period of time. We recommend anyone planning to work abroad to contact the immigration authorities in the country they will be working well in advance of the planned start date as processing times can be long.
Social security
UiO employees going on sabbaticals from Norway to another country will usually keep their membership in Norwegian social security scheme as long as the sabbatical lasts less than 1 year. You should always apply for a confirmation of continued membership in your social security scheme in Norway before going on a sabbatical. It may take several months before you get the correct documentation, so apply as soon as you know where and when you are going. Accompanying family members should also apply for continued membership as well. They must specify in the application if they plan on working from home office abroad.
